Books Quilt and Bloggers Quilt Festival

Books Quilt and Bloggers Quilt Festival

I can hardly contain myself: the Books Quilt is done.

BQ finished1

I started it last December (2014) when I decided to make a quilt for my daughter that would capture her early years. I chose a books quilt because I wanted to remember all those times we read together, before and after she could read by herself. Now she absolutely loves reading and gets excited when she finds a new series. At the time I started this quilt she was into graphic and comic novels big time, but any type of fiction writing gets her.

As I was uploading pictures to my blog I came across a Bloggers Quilt Festival (BQF) happening right now. It is a chance for bloggers to share their work with the online community and I thought why not? I am not a professional but people may still enjoy seeing this quilt. Not that I am expecting to win anything, unless there are raffle prizes ;-). I am, for the first time in my life, “linking” to something like this. What’s the worst that can happen? Here is the Festival website, hosted by Amy (from Amy’s creative side). There are many categories but I am choosing Original Design Quilts Category, although maybe I could have chosen applique too, I guess. You can visit her blog to see the other entries and vote.

Most of the quilt is done in machine applique and uses scraps. The words try to convey all that reading brings to my daughter and they are both in English and Spanish since I hope that she can keep both languages throughout her life. It measures 70 x 63 and the quilting is quite random (I’m still at the beginning of a huge learning curve). Here are some examples I particularly like, the concentric circles in Chrysanthemum and the very hungry caterpillar (he really stands out).
